Video: Have a Continental Christmas at Sheffield's festive market

Sheffield's successful Christmas market in Fargate and the Peace Gardens will be staying in the city a week longer than originally planned.

More than 140,000 people have visited the market and outdoor ice rink, complete with a live music stage and German beer tent, since it opened on November 18. As a result, the market will now stay until New Year's Eve.

Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven said: "Traders have come from all over Europe to bring the Christmas market to Sheffield and their wish to stay another week is testament to their experience in this great city.

"This is the first year we have had a Christmas market of this scale in the heart of the city centre and the very first time we have hosted a genuine outdoor ice rink.

"Both have been a real hit and I'm glad that the people who don't get the chance to visit before Christmas will now have the opportunity to do so right up to the New Year – I may even learn to stand up on skates between now and then."

Late night shopping will also be available again in Sheffield next Wednesday.
