Video: Knife-wielding man arrested on Leeds rail tracks

TWO police sergeants who disarmed and arrested a knife-wielding man on the rail tracks in Kirkstall, Leeds, have been handed commendation certificates.

Sgt Robert Pedley and Acting Sgt Mark Mowvley were praised for their actions after a report last August of a dangerous man on the tracks.

A police helicopter located the man on the tracks in possession of a knife. The railway line was shut while Sgt Pedley and Sgt Mowvley, together with West Yorkshire Police officers, approached the man. He was disarmed and arrested immediately and taken into custody.

As a result trains were stopped causing delays of over two and a half hours.

Chief Constable Andy Trotter said: “This courageous act is a testimony to the professionalism of the officers involved. Their fast actions helped minimise any danger to the public, themselves and as little disruption to the railway.

“I am very proud to be able to congratulate and commend them for their brave actions.”

The man involved, who was 22 at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon, obstructing the railway and a public order offence.

He pleaded guilty to all three charges and was given a suspended sentence.
