Video: Leeds United legends gather to back statue appeal for Don Revie

Plans were announced in May for a 7ft bronze statue to celebrate Revie's successful years at Elland Road in the 1960s and 1970s.

The man leading the project said that 30,000 had been raised towards the 90,000 target.

Long-time Revie admirer Jim Cadman was joined at the stadium today by former players including Paul Reaney, Trevor Cherry, Terry Yorath and Peter Lorimer.

The players gathered in the Legends bar to sign copies of a 64-page magazine about Revie which are being given to fans who have donated 250 towards the statue fund.

The 250 gives them membership to The 1972 Club, in honour of the FA Cup winning team of that year.

Mr Cadman said fund-raising was going well but there was a long way to go.

He said enough money had been raised to allow Barnsley-based artist Graham Ibbeson to begin work on the statue in January.

Peter Lorimer said a Revie statue was "long overdue".

"When it goes up, I am sure it will be a great feature for the fans. Probably, wihout Don, the fans might not have had what they got."

Author Robert Endeacott, who is also backing the appeal by selling Revie tribute badges, said: "People have been really keen to get involved - they want to see a statue.

"The majority of Leeds fans have got long memories and they know how much Don Revie meant to the city."
