WORK began yesterday to prepare the beach on Scarborough’s South Bay for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of visitors during the main summer tourism season.

Sand that has been forced to the back of the beach during the winter by wind and high tides is being transported away from the promenade to near the town’s Spa. The work, which is expected to be completed by next week, will help prevent flooding and sand blowing on to Foreshore Road.

Scarborough Borough Council also warned dog owners that a seasonal ban for their pets on some of the main tourist beaches on Yorkshire’s coast begins at the start of next month. picture: Gerard Binks
