Video: £1m Lowry turns heads at Harrogate Antiques Fair

WITH its vibrant colours and distinctive style, this painting being hung by David Mason, a director of MacConnal-Mason Gallery, has been turning the heads of hundreds of visitors at the Harrogate Antiques Fair.

While for sale, it is, however, unlikely to appear above the mantelpieces of most, as the signed and dated work by Northern artist LS Lowry carries a £1m price tag. The Playground, painted in 1945, is said to evoke optimism at the end of the Second World War.

It is currently up for sale at the major antiques event, which runs at the Harrogate International Centre until Tuesday, and can be found on the stand for fine art dealers MacConnal-Mason, of London, alongside a Lowry drawing, Rebuilding of Rylands, Manchester, from 1929, and works by others, including Beach Study by York-born artist Henry Scott Tuke. The autumn fair, now in its 12th year, has become a major event and attracts dealers from across the world.
