Video: Sheffield’s lasting legacy for golden girl Jess Ennis

A NEWLYWED couple, who married on the day Jessica Ennis won her heptathlon gold, posed for pictures at the postbox in Sheffield which has been painted gold in her honour.

Lizzie and Steve Roche married at Sheffield’s Weston Park Museum on Saturday, August 4 and, the following morning, visited the postbox in Barker’s Pool which was being specially painted.

Teacher Mrs Roche, 29, said: “I saw Jessica on our school sports day at the English Institute of Sport, and she came over to have photos taken with the kids.

“She was very patient and kind with them.”

Meanwhile, council bosses in Sheffield said yesterday that talks are currently under way with the gold medal winner herself, to see what she wants to have “as a lasting legacy following her success.”

Council leader Julie Dore said: “Jessica is now, without doubt, a local hero.

“Not only is this a personal fantastic achievement for Jess, her family and her team, but it is also a great success for Sheffield.

“There are several options to mark her success but, most importantly, we need to consider Jess and her family’s feelings on any suggestions to make sure what is done is what they would want to see.”
