The beautiful feature has been closed to the public since the 1950s, but will be opened as part of the estate’s programme of events for the main season.

And David Lascelles, Eighth Earl of Harewood, said he was as excited as ever to welcome the public to his ancestral home.

Lord Harewood said: “This year is going to be even better than ever. I feel that it’s something all of us here enjoy – people coming here and feeling a sense of belonging, enjoying themselves and wanting it to continue. The estate is not easy to look after and keep running and that’s only worth doing if it’s what people want and if they support it.”

The elaborate main staircase was originally designed by John Carr of York, with renowned architect Robert Adam submitting designs for the walls, ceilings, iron balustrade and handrail.

It underwent major changes in the 1840s, when the Third Earl and Countess asked Charles Barry to turn it into the Imperial Staircase which can be seen today.

Other highlights for the season include In Cloud Country from March 29 until June 30– a collection or art on paper spanning more than 200 years– and a Festival of Play from May 5 to 6.
