Views are sought on park and ride plan

A public consultation on the scheme began this week and people will be able to discuss the proposals in detail at a public meeting, set to take place from 2pm to 7.30pm on Thursday, January 20 at Abbeydale Sports Club in Abbeydale Road.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is set to submit detailed plans to Sheffield Council in March. It wants to build a 139-space car park on the site of the former garden centre, with a new vehicle entrance to the car park and railway station and a new pedestrian crossing on Abbeydale Road.

If the plans are approved, building work could begin this summer, subject to funding.

David Brown, director general of SYPTE, said: "This proposed facility will be a tremendous asset to the area around Dore, where people have been calling for more parking spaces for some time.

"We hope that local people will take the time to view our proposals and to give us their feedback to allow us to submit a design that meets people's needs as closely as possible."

Those unable to attend next week's meeting can collect leaflets with feedback forms from Dore and Totley Library, the post office in Dore Village, Dore Medical Centre, Dore Methodist Church and Dore Parish Church.

A spokesman for SYPTE said: "Dore has suffered parking problems for some time, with vehicles causing obstructions by being parked on the street. It is hoped the new facility will resolve these problems and accommodate new passengers travelling from Dore, Totley, and Millhouses who have previously been unable to use public transport due to lack of parking provision."

The closing date for responses to the consultation will be Monday, February 7.
