Villagers dig deep for Diamond Jubilee trees

THREE communities in Yorkshire are among just 60 across the country that have been given a special tree to plant as part of the Jubilee Diamond Celebration Tree Project.

Lund, near Beverley, will plant a black mulberry on Friday, November 29, with other trees also being planted at Scorton, Richmond, North Yorkshire, and at Newmillerdam, near Wakefield, in an initiative being run by The Tree Council.

Each of the Diamond Jubilee trees will have a commemorative plaque placed next to it and their stories will be recorded in a book that will be presented to the Queen.

Lund Parish Council is also one of 20 community groups and 24 schools to share in grants totalling more than £16,445, which will enable it to plant a variety of other species throughout the week.

Tree council director general Pauline Buchanan Black said: “Lund Parish Council hopes their project will reinforce the importance of being able to value diversity in our trees and our community.”

She added: “These trees will grow, as will the children who help with the planting, and the trees will be there for their children.”
