Visitor attraction plans for tower to be submitted soon

PLANS to revive a redundant tower on York’s medieval walls are due to be submitted within the next month to create a new visitor attraction to highlight the history of the world-famous defences.

Discussions to restore Fishergate Postern Tower have been under way for the last year between York Council and a voluntary group, the Friends of York Walls.

The group’s chairman, Keith Myers, confirmed talks are in an advanced stage and blueprints are due to submitted to planners.

He said: “We are lucky to have such heritage in York, but sometimes we forget what we have. The Friends group was set up to develop the use of the walls and the Fishergate Postern Tower scheme is the first step towards achieving this.”

The plans involve a £65,0000 scheme for a visitor centre and it is hoped funding will be secured from sources including the Heritage Lottery Fund, which could see the project finished next year.

Mr Myers came up with the idea for the Friends group last year, and it was officially launched in January. It now has about 160 members from as far afield as America and Australia. Plans are also being considered to restore the walls’ Red Tower, but proposals are in the very early stages.

The Friends group has also joined an international organisation, the Walled Towns Friendship Circle, which helps preserve and promote Europe’s walled towns and cities.
