Waitrose in apology over cupcake wasp

Supermarket group Waitrose has apologised to a customer after her son found a dead wasp in a cupcake.

Sue Weightman, 52, bought the cakes for her son’s birthday last month from the Little Waitrose store in Nottingham city centre.

But when 22-year-old Alex took a bite out of one, he found a wasp underneath the frosting.

Mrs Weightman, who returned to the store to complain, said: “We want to know if it was malicious or whether it could’ve just dropped down in the atmosphere.

“They need to learn from this. I do not want anybody else being made poorly from something like this.”

Waitrose has apologised and is investigating the incident. “We take customer safety very seriously and are very sorry for any distress caused,” a spokeswoman said.

“Although this is an isolated incident, we are investigating with our branch and our suppliers how this could have happened.”
