Walk in the footsteps of suffragettes

With less than two weeks before the nation goes to the polls people can walk in the footsteps of suffragettes who fought for the right to vote.

An eight-mile circular walk through the Calderdale countryside on Sunday will visit the homes of suffragettes, the clothing factories where they worked and the Hebden Bridge square where Emmeline Pankhurst addressed a packed Votes for Women meeting in January 1907.

The walk will be led by suffrage historian Jill Liddington – author of Rebel Girls: Their Fight for the Vote – and will take people in the steps of Calderdale's most celebrated suffragette, fustian clothing machinist, Lavena Saltonstall.
