Walker, 75, injured by hit-and-run biker

AN ELDERLY woman has been seriously injured by a motorbike in a hit-and-run accident as she walked along the Cleveland Way on the North York Moors.

The 75-year-old woman, from Warwickshire, was hit by what witnesses describe as a large sports bike – believed to be a Honda – on the B1257 between Helmsley and Stokesley, near the village of Chop Gate, late on Sunday afternoon.

Officers said the biker stopped a short distance away before leaving the scene in the company of a second rider in the direction of Stokesley.

The woman was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Traffic sergeant Neil Campbell, of North Yorkshire Police, said neighbouring forces were being contacted for help in tracing the bike.

He added: “The rider did nothing to find out how the woman was or help her,” he said. “I would appeal to the rider, or the second biker, to contact us.

“These actions will not be tolerated.”

Earlier this month North Yorkshire police launched the latest phase of the most comprehensive crackdown yet to improve biker safety on the county’s roads.

The safety campaign was launched by North Yorkshire Police to target rogue bikers and combat a rising number of fatalities in recent years.

The county’s road network, which covers 5,000 miles and criss-crosses stunning countryside including the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors national parks, is a huge draw for bikers from across the nation.

Witnesses to the crash, which happened at about 5.20pm, are urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 08456060247.
