Warm work for the sake of art
Blacksmith Robert Smith gets warmed up for an event today in which more than 40 blacksmiths from across the country will fire up an anticipated 30 forges at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet in order to produce a piece of public art.
The event, which is believed to be the largest gathering of blacksmiths in the UK, is part of the Galvanize Sheffield festival which celebrates the city’s steel-making heritage. Artwork produced by the blacksmiths will go on show in the city’s Winter Garden. Those visiting Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet today and tomorrow will have the opportunity to try blacksmithing for themselves.
