Warning as burglary and car crime on rise

Operation Lockdown has been launched in response to a two per cent rise in both these crimes from April to August compared to last year.

Deputy Chief Constable Andy Holt said: “Everyone has a role to play in reducing burglary and vehicle crime.

“Officers and staff are working hard to catch offenders and conduct extra patrols in hotspot locations but we cannot tackle these issues on our own.

“A significant number of crimes can be avoided if residents and motorists take some simple preventative measures.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of locking your doors and windows and keeping valuables out of sight.

“South Yorkshire Police will do its upmost to track down criminals intent on breaking into your car or home but you can stop the opportunist thief by securing your property.”

A force spokesman said that, despite an overall rise in house burglary, offences in Doncaster are down by 22 per cent, in part due 
to an initiative that uses crime-mapping information to predict where such crimes may take place.

Officers “maintain a visible presence”, the spokesman said, and offer crime prevention advice.

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright added: “I know from experience the devastation that can be caused from someone coming into your home to steal your belongings.

“A person’s home should be a place that they feel safe at all times. Please help the police to reduce this crime by following their simple advice.”
