Warning to drivers as work starts to replace gas pipes

Motorists face disruption as a £430,000 scheme to replace old gas pipes gets underway in Whitby.

The scheme will begin next week and is due to be completed by Easter next year.

In total, 13 streets will be affected but Northern Gas Networks says no works will be carried out in the main shopping areas of the seaside port in the run-up to Christmas.

Northern Gas Networks, the region’s gas distributor, is investing £430,000 replacing nearly two miles of ageing metal gas pipes.

Work will begin next Monday in Flowergate.

The repairs will then continue into Silver Street and Wellington Terrace where a road closure is required. Signed diversions will be put in place.

The main works will start in the new year, which will be carried out in stages, with letters sent to those in affected streets.
