Warning to flytippers in wake of prosecutions

ENFORCEMENT officers have warned that they will adopt a zero tolerance approach on litter and fly-tipping after the latest offenders have been brought to justice.

Officials from Scarborough Borough Council’s environmental services department have stressed that all businesses must ensure their waste is disposed of correctly.

The council’s head of environmental services, Andy Skelton, said: “Our recycling and waste enforcement team is on hand to offer advice but we will not hesitate to take action against those who selfishly refuse to take responsibility for the waste they produce.”

The warning comes after Gary Swallow of the Helping Hands laundry service was found guilty by Scarborough magistrates on Friday of failing to properly dispose of waste. Rubbish was found in the bins of neighbouring families and their recycling became contaminated from the refuse. Swallow was fined £1,200 and ordered to pay £184 in costs. On the same day, Jonathan Wells of Turks Head Pub, Eastborough, pleaded guilty to having no lawful means of disposing of his pub waste after repeatedly dumping rubbish in the street. Wells was fined £240 along with a £15 victim surcharge.
