Warning as parking charges to rise

IT will cost 10p an hour extra to park across the East Riding from next month.

Even with the increases for both on-street and off-street parking from Thursday March 28, East Riding Council claims the charges “compare favourably” with neighbouring authorities.

But Andrew Allison, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Increasing car parking charges will only drive people to out-of-town shopping centres.”

The increase means all-day parking in the East Riding on and off-street will cost £5.40.

Residents and special group permits will rise between £1 and £5 a year, while annual permits will go up £50, to be phased in over two years at £25 a year.

A number of car parks, in Beverley, Bridlington, Hornsea, Driffield, and Goole, will operate under a new price structure that is free for the first half hour, short stay only, and then £1 for an hour, £2 for two, £3 for three and £4 for all day.

Council leader Coun Steve Parnaby said: “Contrary to popular myth, car parking charges are not a means for councils to ‘make money’, as all of what the council receives goes back into the area’s transport infrastructure.”
