Wave of thefts at pumping stations

FLOOD fears have been sparked in Doncaster after an escalation in thefts from pumping stations owned by internal drainage boards in charge of the borough's waterways.

Doncaster Council said it was "extremely concerned" about the rash of crime, which has seen 12 pumping stations, mainly to the north of the town, targeted since January.

Drainage commissioners said the damage caused is affecting the ability of the borough's pumping stations to provide flood protection to at-risk communities.

The estimated cost of repairs to the pumping stations is 138,500 and the Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: "I am appalled at this theft and vandalism which can cause serious consequences for local communities. I fervently hope the perpetrators are caught and brought to justice."

South Yorkshire Police has urged anyone with information about the theft or vandalism to contact them on 01142 202020.
