Weary walkers

A YEAR after the hottest Trailtrekker ever, the hardy souls who took part in yesterday’s gruelling 30-hour challenge across the Dales could at least be thankful that the rain and cold – which has dominated the weather ever since then – decided to relent for one weekend at least.

As well as deriving the personal satisfaction that comes from completing such a difficult course, however, each walker was also driven by the desire to sustain the priceless work of Oxfam for another year.

For, at a time when the Government is under fire for its protection of the overseas aid budget, Trailtrekker is a reminder that it is the enduring work of charities such as Oxfam that truly underpins the struggle against global poverty.
