Forecasters predicting Bank Holiday washout as getaway starts

The big getaway this weekend will see millions of Britons take to the roads and fly abroad for the extended break.

Weather forecasters have warned that Yorkshire looks set to expect heavy spells of rain over the next two days.

Sun worshippers enjoyed soaring temperatures across the region as they made the most of the heat during the Bank Holiday weekend earlier this month.

But forecasters warn the weather looks set to brighten by Bank Holiday Monday with just the chance of a few showers in Yorkshire.

Gemma Plumb of Meteogroup told The Yorkshire Post: “Unfortunately, Saturday looks pretty wet and we are looking at some heavy spells of rain with the risk of a few thundery showers again.

“On Sunday there will be some sunshine around and further showers are expected with some of them being especially heavy during the afternoon. The best 
of the Bank Holiday weather 
will be on Monday at the moment.

“A lot of places should get away with a dry day and the risk of a few showers breaking out through the day here and there.”

The AA and traffic information company Trafficmaster have predicted that as many as 17 million cars could take to the roads over the course of the weekend.

The number of travellers could be swelled by a series of sporting events, music festivals and air shows across the country.

A survey by the RAC showed that today is likely to be the busiest day of the holiday period, with around 3.5 million motorists on the move.

National Express is laying on 10,000 extra seats on coaches over the weekend.

London is its most popular destination, followed by Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and Bournemouth.

AA patrol man of the year Mark Spowage said: “Whatever the weather, drivers should be prepared for extra traffic and possible delays on major routes to coastal areas and holiday resorts.

“Planning your journey and avoiding the main bottlenecks could relieve the frustration of sitting in a traffic jam.”
