Storm Francis: strong winds and heavy rain to hit Yorkshire as Met Office issues weather warnings

Last week saw Storm Ellen bring heavy rain and strong winds to Yorkshire, but now Storm Francis is bringing further bad weather this week

The Met Office has issued both yellow and amber weather warnings for rain and wind to various parts of the country over the next few days. Here’s what you need to know.

Storm Francis will hit Yorkshire over Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Chief Meteorologist Andy Page, said “The UK is in for another unseasonably wet and windy spell with Storm Francis arriving on Tuesday. There will be strong winds and heavy rain, especially in the west of the UK.

“A number of severe weather warnings have been issued and these warnings can be updated regularly so please keep up to date with the latest Met Office forecast.”

What are the weather warnings in place?

A Met Office yellow weather warning for wind is in place from 9am on Tuesday to 9am on Wednesday (26 August), covering East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North West and South West England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber.

Wednesday will see a windy start with outbreaks of rain. These will ease through the morning, with much lighter winds during the afternoon and some bright spells.

Storm Francis will then clear to the East of the UK by Wednesday lunchtime (26 August), explains the Met Office. This will leave a brighter and more settled outlook for the remainder of the day.

However, a few showers may develop over the North York Moors and Pennines later in the day.

Wednesday evening will see scattered showers in the north at first, but it will otherwise be dry with clear spells for many. Outbreaks of rain will return by the end of the night, locally heavy at times.

Thursday (27 August) will often be cloudy with spells of rain, heavy at times. A few brighter spells are possible in the south and winds will be light, but it will feel cool.

What will the weekend weather be like?

It will become windier on Friday (28 August), with further pulses of rain. It will staying windy on Saturday (29 August) with a few showers, before turning chilly overnight.

Sunday (30 August) will be drier, brighter and less windy.

There is also forecast to be further unsettled weather in the UK from Tuesday next week (1 September).
