Web exclusive: Leeds as we knew it... Rediscovered video from the 1950s

THE buses were green and the gents wore hats and ties, but otherwise there is a surprising amount to recognise about 1950s Leeds from this unique film footage.

Recorded by photographer and retired teacher Brian Ormondroyd, this 1958 cine film is a quick tour of the city highlights and takes in The Headrow, Briggate, The Majestic Cinema (which later became a nightclub), the Odeon and more.

Filming from a vehicle as his friend drove, Mr Ormondroyd captures a nostalgic vision of Leeds.

Then stay on board for a look at how the city had changed over 20 years as the lens is trained upon Leeds in the 1970s. Showing minastays such as the town hall and civic hall, there is also the 'modern' buildings of the University of Leeds and the Leeds Playhouse - very much buildings of their time.

As the camera pans around Park Square, just to show that some things do not change, there's a glimpse of some potentially unfortunate motorist's car being checked by a parking attendant!

So, sit back and enjoy a trip round the Leeds many of us knew and which younger viewers will still recognise.
