The 31st Olympics games will continue until Sunday, August 21. Some of the events taking place this week are the men’s and women’s marathons, beach volleyball, table tennis finals, high jump, speed walking, and golf. The closing ceremonies will take place on Sunday night turns into Monday morning in Rio’s Maracana stadium. This has been one of the most controversial games, but closing ceremonies are typically grand and exciting, and should highlight the country’s vibrant culture and exciting musical styles.

Cologne is hosting the Gamescom videogames convention starting on August 17. This is one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. The event is held annually at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. This trade show is an opportunity for game developers and console makers to preview and show off new and upcoming games in press conferences and hands-on areas. It is the world’s largest videogames event with over 345,000 visitors.

A-level results are due to come out on Thursday. Students will find out whether or not they received the grades required to enter the universities they were admitted to. Some students will be pleased and can continue planning their first year at university, others will have to scramble to find a school to accept them. There are also a select few students who will receive grades much higher than expected and will be able to apply to more prestigious or competitive schools.

European Union citizens currently living in Scotland will have the opportunity on Wednesday (August 17) to question First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her cabinet about the implications of the vote for the UK to leave the EU.

The Brexit vote was widely unpopular in Scotland and the FM is openly in opposition to the decision to leave. She has previously spoken about holding a second Scottish referendum to leave the United Kingdom.

This event will be an opportunity for people living in Scotland to question her about her plan for the upcoming months.

Starting later today the two-day hearing involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Case is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles. Heard has filed for divorce after only a year of marriage, claiming she was the victim of domestic violence. Heard also filed a restraining order against the actor, which the judge issued at the last hearing on May 28. During this hearing Heard plans to testify if she is called to the stand.

HEAT WAVE

Britain will experience a huge heat wave this week, stretching through the majority of the United Kingdom. It is supposed to be uncharacteristically hot, with some areas predicted to reach over 30C. Even in Yorkshire the forecast shows bright and warm weather for the whole week.

Parts of the county are expected to reach up to 26C. This has been an unusually hot summer for the UK, with record highs reached earlier in the season.

ALL NIGHT LONG

The first night tube services are going to launch in London this Friday. The Victoria and Central lines will be the first two open on friday, with the Piccadilly, Jubilee, and Northern lines following suit later this autumn.

The lines will run approximately every 10-20 minutes (depending how far out into the city it travels), and will be open 24 hours a day.
