Week’s grace over bridge traffic ban

MOTORISTS who have breached new restrictions on Lendal Bridge in York will not be fined after the council announced an unexpected week-long grace period.

Fines of £60 will be issued, however, from today for drivers who ignore the traffic ban that bars access for cars, lorries and motorbikes during daytime hours as part of a six-month trial.

The controversial scheme was launched last Tuesday, and immediately caused confusion for motorists with many claiming they were unaware it was going ahead and amid complaints of inadequate warnings with signs that were easy to miss or with wording that was unclear.

Yesterday the council confirmed it had decided on a grace period, which ended yesterday. Additional signs have also been installed.

Conservative councillor Chris Steward said: “The process of closure has been a farce and the lack of signs, their late appearance and their confused nature has meant the decision to give a period of grace has become necessary.”

Darren Richardson, director of city and environmental services, insisted the authority had used “many channels” to advise motorists of the scheme but added: “However, this grace period of one week has provided us the opportunity to observe the restrictions in place and to undertake additional publicity.”

Access to Lendal Bridge for cars. lorries and motorbikes is banned between 10.30am and 5pm, seven days a week. Buses, cyclists, pedestrians, taxis and emergency vehicles have full access.
