Wetherspoon's takes top ale award

A busy Wetherspoon's pub in Bridlington has been named East Yorkshire Town Pub of the Year 2010 by real ale enthusiasts.

The Prior John, on The Promenade in Bridlington, which is owned by J D Wetherspoon, was managed throughout 2010 by Helen Barnes, now manager of the Postern Gate in York.

Runner-up was the Green Dragon in Beverley, which is owned by Mitchells & Butlers (Birmingham) and is run by Glyn and Alan Clarke.

Chairman of the Hull and East Yorkshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale Alan Canvess, said "The Prior John was nominated for the 2009 title, and the Green Dragon was the winner of the 2009 title.

"Therefore, both pubs have not only shown a high consistency of standards over the last 12 months, but also over the last two years."

Mr Canvess will present framed certificates to the licensees of both pubs during a presentation trip on the evening of Saturday January 15, when members will visit all the 2010 nominees.

The three others were the Tiger Inn in Driffield, the Marine Bar in Bridlington and the Bell Hotel in Driffield.
