Wheels in motion on cycle crossing

Work is set to begin in January on a new traffic-free route over the River Swale which will provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safer alternative to the busy Catterick Bridge.

The scheme is part of a Lottery-funded project to extend the Sustran National Cycle Network, and will run along the old iron bridge, linking Brompton with Colburn and Catterick.

Brompton-on-Swale Parish Council chairman Andrew Guest said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that these improvements are going ahead. It was back in 2004 that the council first highlighted this dangerous crossing and what could be done to improve safety.”

Sustrans’ director in Yorkshire, David Hall, added: “The new river crossing will overcome a major barrier to walking and cycling in the area. It will improve connections to the local cycle network and transform the appeal of human powered daily journeys for many people.”

The parish council will install three portraits along the route, depicting figures with associations to the river, railway, or the bridge itself.
