Who could have abandoned this wounded miniature Shetland pony at a Yorkshire coal yard?

Maggie the miniature pony was discovered with deep cuts to her face and puncture wounds on her neck, by a concerned member of the public.

Animal welfare officers collected Maggie and took her to a vet, where she is receiving treatment.

The RSPCA is appealing for information about Maggie’s state after she was left behind gates at the abandoned coal yard on Lund Hill Lane, Royston, Barnsley.

RSPCA chief inspector, Lynsey Harris, said: “She was very lethargic and had deep cuts to her face and nasty puncture wounds on her neck.

“The wounds were sore, infected and infested with maggots. Poor little Maggie must have been very uncomfortable and in a lot of pain.

“All Maggie needed was a friend and luckily for her, she was spotted by a concerned member of the public who did the right thing and took her to safety before calling us.”

Once Maggie is fit again, she will be moved to an RSPCA centre to find her a new owner.

Insp Harris added: “We’d like to hear from anyone who may recognise this little pony or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area where she was dumped on Thursday evening.
