Who will be making the news in the next seven days?

Since the last episode of The Office aired 14 years ago, Ricky Gervais has not been short of things to do. In between a few films, a couple of other sitcoms and his live stand-up shows, he’s hosted the Golden Globes, campaigned for various animal rights causes and written a children’s book.

However, it seems a bit like Steve Coogan and Alan Partridge, Gervais can’t step away from his most famous creation. Life on the Road, which shadows Brent as he travels up and down the country living his dream of being a rock star, gets its world premiere next week. While it’s a rare sitcom which successfully transfers to the big screen, Gervais is optimistic. He said: “This film delves much more into his private life than The Office ever did and we really get to peel back the layers of this extraordinary, ordinary man.”

Kick off

It seems only a few days since Leicester held the Premiership trophy aloft for the first time in the club’s history. But it all starts again next weekend. The Foxes start their latest campaign by travelling to Hull City, whose season looks set to unravel before its even begun. With the departure of manager Steve Bruce, an injury crisis and rumours of take over talks which never amounted to much, it has been an eventful summer for Hull, whose odds of doing a Leicester and finishing top are currently 1,000 to 1.

Greatest Show on Earth

If the comings and goings of the Premiership, are already starting to wear a little thin, Rio should offer a little respite. While the second week has the finals of the track and field, as the first week proper gets underway there will be enough members of Team GB to cheer for. Watch out on Monday for Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow in the 10m synchro diving with Jack Laugher and Chris Mears following a few days later in the 3m event. Wednesday sees the first gold medal rowing races, which GB has previously dominated and the week will be rounded off on Friday when Sheffield golden girl Jessica Ennis Hill begins the defence of her heptathlon title.

A little grouse

Tweeds at the ready for one of the most important day’s in the rural calendar. Next Friday is the Glorious Twelfth, the start of the annual grouse shooting season.

North of the border in Scotland, the season has been delayed after a freezing cold spring killed of hundreds of chicks, but it should be business as usual in Yorkshire as the first shoots venture out into the heather moorland early in the morning and the first grouses dishes due to be served up in restaurants by the end of the day.

A lot to celebrate

To mark its 250th anniversary, Christie’s will lift the lid on its Out of the Ordinary auction. David Gainsborough Roberts has spent the last 40 years amassing an extraordinary selection of memorabilia from the worlds of film and entertainment, royalty and politics, sport, and travel and exploration and from today, buyers will be able to see exactly what will be up for sale in September. Highlights are expected to include a set of keys from the Titanic, a silk head scarf and agal owned by Lawrence of Arabia and a Stetson presented to Sir Winston Churchill.

Lords of the stage

Acting royalty, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart have recently been reunited at Sheffield Lyceum. The pair are currently starring in a new production of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land. The show opened to the public on Wednesday, but next week theatre critics will deliver their verdict on the play, directed by Sean Mathius, before it heads to the West End.
