This is one week committed republicans will be well advised to stay under the duvet. On Wednesday, the Queen becomes the longest reigning monarch in British history, overtaking her great grandmother Queen Victoria and the celebrations will be big.

The Royal Mint is marking the event by commissioning commemorative £20 silver coins, The Outdoor Trust will unveil a special walkway at Windsor featuring 63 plaques - one for every year of her reign and there will be a parade down the River Thames - one which will hopefully be a little brighter than the rain-soaked affair which marked the Golden Jubilee.

Not to be outdone, in Bridlington, David Hinde, the loudest town crier in the country, will be making a proclamation at 4.18pm - the exact time some believe she will become the longest reigning monarch.

Racing legends

Recordbreaking rider AP McCoy is to make a return to the saddle at Doncaster - for one race only - on Wednesday.

The winning-most rider in National Hunt history. McCoy is one of 16 retired jockeys lining up in the Clipper Logistics Legends Classified Stakes on day one of the Ladbrokes St Leger festival.

Proceeds from the event will be split between the Northern Racing College and the Injured Jockeys Fund’s Jack Berry House at Malton.

The four-day festival culminates with the St Leger, the world’s oldest Classic, on Saturday, when Skipton-born trainer William Haggs will be attempting to win the race with his Epsom Derby third Storm The Stars.

Movie memorabilia

If you have a few thousand pounds lying around and want to invest in a slice of film history, this could be the week.

On Wednesday, Warwick Davis will open the Prop Store auction preview exhibition. Items on display include a stormtrooper helmet from The Empire Strikes Back, estimated to fetch £60,000, and Leonard Nimoy’s Spock costume from Star Trek, estimated at £70,000.

Looking for something more contemporary? The following day, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible suit will go under the hammer in Christie’s Out of the Ordinary auction.

Labour’s new leader

Finally, the day has almost arrived. After months of campaigning and controversy, on Thursday the Labour leadership ballot closes with the results announced on Saturday. While Jeremy Corbyn is still the bookies favourite to head the party, as the race nears its final stretch, Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper has made a late surge, overtaking Andy Burnham in second place.

The Krays

Do we really need another film or television drama about The Krays? Probably not, but Brian Helgeland’s take on the East End gangsters looks like it should be a cut above the rest. Playing both Ronnie and Reggie, Tom Hardy’s performance has successfully generated a whole heap of publicity ahead of the film’s release and while we doubt we’ll learn anything new about the brothers who terrorised a section of London during the 1960s, Hardy is already being talked about as a replacement for Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Science Explained

The British Science Festival takes over Bradford this week. Featuring more than 100 talks and demonstrations, among other things, the event promises to lay bear the secret language of Stonehenge, a brief history of the space suit, the science behind a morning cup of coffee and what death really smells like.
