Wide range of styles at art group’s 64th exhibition

ONE of the East Riding’s longest-running amateur art exhibitions has again proved there is a rich vein of talent in the area.

A total of 162 works were on display at Cottingham Civic Hall at the weekend in Haltemprice Art Group’s 64th annual exhibition, featuring a wide range of styles and subjects in watercolour, gouache, oil, acrylic, pencil and various combinations.

Group secretary Patricia Tillotson said: “It was a very nice exhibition to walk around and see. Some times if you are on holiday and wander into an exhibition it’s pretty obvious that nearly everybody there has gone to the same teacher, but with our lot, with it being a group, you get a wide range of interesting and different pieces.”

Among the prize winners was Jill Cumming – who picked up both the Armstrong Trophy for best watercolour with Hessle Foreshore, and the Nicholson Cup for the adjudicator Robin Horspool’s personal favourite, Winter Walk.

Gill Stansfield won the Bagnall Cup for her mixed-media study Venetian Lady.

Anyone who would like to see the group at work is invited to its last session of the season at Cottingham High School on Tuesday, May 3, 7pm to 9pm, when the subject will be Short Pose With A Prop.

Some outdoor sessions will be held in summer.
