On the wild side...

THE Forestry Commission is helping give people more than just a taste of the great outdoors by leading a rustic wild camp in Dalby Forest.

Bushcraft expert Mark Barker, from Cropton, will be helping novices to set up camp and spend a night under the starry forest sky serenaded by hooting owls at the North Yorkshire beauty spot, near Pickering.

“The aim is for people to make their own shelter from branches and brash and learn natural methods of fire lighting,” Mr Barker said. With a rustic roof over your head and the ability to make hot food and drinks the forest isn’t such a bad place to be. We’ll also be learning about wild food and how to spot animal tracks. It’s surprising just how elemental a night in the forest can be.”
