Will this be the most Yorkshire wedding cake ever made... the Yorkshire Pudding cake?

Dream weddings feature many typical sights - the speeches, the dresses, the Yorkshire puddings. Well, maybe not the latter. But one long-established, Yorkshire-based company has plans to change that. Their solution, though, is no piece of cake.

That’s because Aunt Bessie’s are creating a very unique dessert. They are producing a wedding cake which is made out of Yorkshire puddings. It is being done to celebrate one of the county’s iconic foods on National Yorkshire Pudding Day, which is taking place on February 7.

It carries on a trend of unusual foods being served up at weddings.

Over the summer, Jo Wheatley - a former Great British Bake-off winner - had commented that more people were looking for unique centrepieces to their wedding meals and it sparked off all sorts of recipes being considered. Aunt Bessie’s is owned by WJFG which was established in 1851 and they have now applied their own modern twist to the craze.

Rather than being made with icing and ribbons, their wedding cake will consist of three tiers of Yorkshire puddings and a fountain of gravy.

Aunt Bessie’s is encouraging couples who are tying the knot - and are fans of the food - to contact them and celebrate by eating their wedding cake with a difference.

“Why should they only be served with a roast dinner and why can’t we enjoy them elsewhere, on special occasions too?” said Lorraine Rothwell, of Aunt Bessie’s. “It’ll certainly have them all smiling and will be a wedding cake to remember.”

Lorraine said that Yorkshire puddings have played a key role in Sunday roasts across generations and they are proud of that. However, at Aunt Bessie’s, they know that Yorkshire puddings are “more versatile”.

It remains to be seen what the results are. Couples will decide if this is all in good taste… or simply takes the cake.
