William's waxwork for would-be brides

American artist Jennifer Rubell has created a life-size wax statue of William complete with a replica of fiance Kate Middleton's sapphire and diamond engagement ring attached to its forearm.

The detailed model is in the pose the prince struck for his engagement photograph at St James's Palace and would-be royal brides can slip on the ring and stand arm-in-arm with the second-in-line to the throne.

Rubell, 40, is a former food writer from New York who normally features edible objects in her work – from suspending a ton of honey-coated ribs from a ceiling to hanging more than 1,500 doughnuts from a wall.

Speaking about the installation, called Engagement, the artist has reportedly said: "The royal wedding is a Prince Charming fantasy that still seems to speak to women so I wanted to offer those women a chance to stand in Kate's place.

"I hope it's not just women who step up, though."

Ms Rubell's exhibition opens next month at the Stephen Friedman Gallery in central London and the William statue will be placed in the window, enticing would-be brides into the building.

It is thought to be one of the first art pieces inspired by the Royal engagement.

The exhibition will also feature five blank pictures called Drinking Paintings which feature taps offering various tipples.

The exhibition runs from February 8 to March 5.
