Woman rescued after bin set on fire at house

Firefighters rescued a woman from her home in Doncaster after a wheelie bin was put up against her front door and set alight.

They carried her to safety from her bedroom before giving her oxygen for smoke inhalation.

Crews were called to the semi-detached house i n Ellershaw Lane, Conisborough, just after 10.30pm on Thursday.

Neighbours had sprayed the front door with a dry powder extinguisher, helping to contain the fire, but the door was still burnt and the house smoke-damaged. The victim, in her 20s, did not need to be taken to hospital.

Watch manager Daz Robertson said: "Setting fire to wheelie bins may seem like a game, but this woman could have been seriously injured or even killed if she hadn't been alerted by smoke alarms and the prompt actions of her neighbours.

"Setting any kind of fire can put people at risk, but deliberately placing a wheelie bin against a front door is extremely serious."

Last August, a baby and five adults were rescued by firefighters after another blazing wheelie bin caused a fire at a block of flats in Adwick-le-Street, Doncaster.

Mr Robertson also reminded people to leave enough space for emergency vehicles to get through when parking their cars.

He said double-parked cars on the road made it difficult to get the fire appliance through.
