Woman who fled fatal house fire suffered stab wounds

A woman who fled a house fire in which her estranged partner died had suffered stab wounds, it has emerged.

The 24-year-old Slovakian woman, who fled the house in Argyle Street, Keighley, remained in hospital yesterday following the blaze at about 5pm on Tuesday. She was being treated for serious injuries, including burns and stab wounds, as police continued to investigate the fatal house fire.

A forensic postmortem has also been carried out on the 33-year-old Kurdish man who died in the fire and early indications, which will be subject to further tests, suggest he died from smoke inhalation.

Det Insp John Mountain, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said: "A full forensic post mortem has now been concluded on the 33-year-old male and, while the investigation remains at an early stage, from our initial inquiries we are treating the female party as a victim with regard to this incident. A full file is now being prepared for the coroner."

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the woman's injuries or the fire which is being treated as suspicious.

The fire is believed to have been started by an accelerant. The body of the 33-year-old man was found inside the property.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone with information about the fire or who saw anything suspicious on Argyle Street at around 5pm on July 13 to ring 0845 6060606.
