Woman's attacker hangs himself in jail

A DRUG addict who beat a woman of 78 with a crutch and robbed her of her Christmas shopping money was found hanged in his cell at Leeds prison today – three weeks into his six year sentence.

Craig Moore, 39, was found suspended by a ligature in his cell by staff after his cellmate raised the alarm in the early of hours of this morning.

A prison service spokesperson said: "Staff attempted CPR and an ambulance was called but Moore was pronounced dead at 5.07am by paramedics."

Moore, who told officers he had taken Valium tablets and had been drinking lager on the day of the robbery, had used one of his own crutches to hit his victim about the face and body before escaping with the 75 she had been counting out at her ground floor flat in sheltered accommodation in Idle, Bradford.

The victim was struck at least four times with the crutch, knocked to the floor and suffered extensive bruising in the attack which happened just a week before Christmas and left her feeling like "a prisoner in her own home", Bradford Crown Court heard at the time.

Judge Peter Benson described it as a cruel and vindictive robbery.

Moore, of no fixed address, had a long list of previous convictions including house burglary.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will now carry out an investigation into Moore's death.
