Women of Steel plan to be debated

WOMEN who worked in Sheffield's steel industry during World War Two are set to be recognised with a new permanent memorial in the city centre.

Members of Sheffield Council are set to discuss the Women of Steel memorial at a meeting next Wednesday. Ideas so far are for a a contemporary sculpture at the top of Howard Street; a figurative bronze sculpture in Barkers Pool; commemorative plaques as part of the seating in Howard Street, or a garden of remembrance.

Director of culture Paul Billington said: "This is an important project for the city and if Cabinet gives us the go-ahead then we will work closely with the surviving women who worked in the steel industry during the war to make sure the memorial is both fitting and popular.

"Beyond that we will also seek the wider views of the public to ensure that everyone has their say."
