Work begins on £1m council housing

WORK costing around £1m has begun on seven new council houses in Rawmarsh, Rotherham.

The homes will replace terraced bungalows which no longer met modern building standards and were demolished by Rotherham Council in 2009.

When completed later this year, the scheme will comprise four two-bedroomed houses and three four-bedroomed family homes.

Ward councillor Shaun Wright said: "I am delighted that work has now begun to build these much-needed affordable homes in Rawmarsh for local people currently on our housing waiting list.

"The authority chose major housing association, Home Group, to develop the homes for us and they have come up with a high-quality, energy efficient housing scheme that will minimise running costs for the new residents."

Rawmarsh is in a regeneration area supported by Rotherham Council and Transform South Yorkshire, the housing and regeneration partnership. Strata Construction of Doncaster was chosen to build the new homes and workers are now on site.

Ian Clyde, development director for Home Group's central region, said: "This is the second home development for the area and we are making excellent progress helping to regenerate Rawmarsh."
