Work in pipeline to stop bursts

A WATER pipe which has burst more than a dozen times in the last five years in a North Yorkshire market town is due to be given a major upgrade.

Yorkshire Water has announced that it will carry out the 122,000 improvement scheme in the hope of increasing the reliability of the pipe in Bedale.

The pipe has burst 13 times since 2006 after it has become weak with age.

A section of pipe almost half-a-mile long between Market Place and the company's nearby sewage works will be replaced with a new plastic pipe.

No roads will be closed while the work is carried out, although it will be necessary to operate two-way traffic lights on South End for health and safety reasons.

Contractors are due to start work on Monday next week and the upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Yorkshire Water has stressed the project will not disrupt the town's market day. No work will take place on Tuesdays when the main market is held.

A drop-in session is being held at Bedale Hall Community Centre tomorrow to give the public the chance to find out more about Yorkshire Water's plans.
