Work starts on resort’s youth centre

Work is set to start next month on a £6.5m youth and community complex in Scarborough which could eventually see more than 100 new jobs created.

The Street will boast dance studios, a sports hall, a climbing wall and a café - with work set to be completed by October next year. The state-of-the-art four-storey building, on the William Street car park, will also feature a recording studio, an art studio, shops, a garden and roof terraces. The facility will offer opportunities for education and training, exercise, advice and support and a safe location to meet and socialise. It is hoped that after three years it will have created jobs for up to 130 people.

The Street will be developed and owned by Scarborough-based enterprise charity Seachange, working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council. Seachange enterprise manager Sarah Fenwick said: “What we will soon see will be a contemporary, landmark building designed by young people for young people.”
