Work to begin on underground ‘lake’

WORK to create a huge underground reservoir in Leeds began this week.

The massive project in Bramley will see Yorkshire Water replace its ageing underground storage facility with a new structure that can hold 16 million litres of treated drinking water.

Costing £4m, the work is expected to take 18 months to complete.

When finished, the reservoir will supply water to more than
27,400 properties across West Yorkshire.

It is one of the biggest tanks being built by the water company between 2010 and 2015 and is part of a £23m investment programme.

Dave Ellis, project manager for Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re used to carrying big construction projects, but the sheer size of the tank we’re constructing puts this in a different league.

“When complete, the tank, which will measure approximately 69 metres in length and six metres in depth, will be capable of holding more than six Olympic swimming pools worth of treated drinking water.

“Not only will this tank boost the reliability of our vast water supply network, but it will also ensure that customers in West Yorkshire continue to receive some of the best drinking water in the world.”
