Clashes greet new president

New president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, faces an uphill struggle as he begins a six-year term following the death of socialist Hugo Chavez.

Mr Maduro won a disputed presidential election, but squandered a double-digit advantage in the race.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles has demanded a recount and students have clashed with National Guard troops who fired tear gas and plastic bullets egged on by pot banging residents in capital Caracas

The divisions will make it difficult to tackle Venezuela’s many problems which include crumbling infrastructure, persistent shortages of food and medicine, double-digit inflation. and a murder rate of 73 per 100,000 people, among the world’s worst.
