Earthquakes in southern Spain kill at least 10

TWO earthquakes in quick succession struck in south-eastern Spain, killing at least 10 people including a child aged 13 and causing major damage to buildings.

The epicentre of the quakes – with magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2 making them the worst in Spain for 50 years – was close to the town of Lorca.

The first happened just after 5pm local time and the second followed about two hours later.

The Murcia regional government said a hospital in Lorca had to be evacuated, dozens of injured were being treated and a field hospital was being set up.

The quakes happened in a seismically active area which is home to many British expats.
