The great bridge of China

China has opened the world’s longest cross-sea bridge.

The Jiaozhou Bay bridge spans 26 miles (35.4 km) across the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay in eastern Shandong province to link China’s busy eastern port city of Qingdao to the offshore district of Huangdao. State-run CCTV says the bridge, which is supported by more than 5,000 pillars, cost more than £964m and took four years to build.. The authorities expect the development to boost industrial investment in Huangdau and foreign trade through Qingdao. Chinese TV reports said the bridge passed construction appraisals on Monday and both it and an undersea tunnel opened to traffic yesterday. According to Guinness World Records, the previous record holder for a bridge over water is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana. The Chinese bridge is more than 2.5 miles longer.
