Nearly 50 hurt as train hits car

Police said nearly 50 people were injured when a regional train hit a car which ended up on a railway after an accident in eastern Germany.

Federal police spokesman Torsten Henkel said the car was hit by another vehicle and pushed on to the tracks in Lauterbach, between Leipzig and Chemnitz.

The driver of the car managed to get out of the vehicle before the accident but the train could not stop in time.

He said three of the train carriages derailed and one tipped over on its side, injuring nine people seriously.

Another 40 people suffered minor injuries.
