Ship sails into sunset

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Sting’s Broadway musical is to close, producers have said.

Sting, who wrote the songs for The Last Ship, jumped into the show in December, replacing Jimmy Nail as a shipyard foreman.

While that improved sales, they did not skyrocket and The Last Ship will now close when Sting leaves the show on January 24.

The production is a semi-autobiographical story about a prodigal son who returns to his northern England shipbuilding town to reclaim the girl he abandoned when he fled years before.

He finds the workers are now unemployed and entertaining the idea of building one last boat to show off their skill and pride.

The show has struggled at the box office,
