Worker dies in stadium collapse

ONE person was reported killed and 10 people taken to hospital after the roof at FC Twente’s Grolsch Veste stadium collapsed during building work in the eastern Dutch town of Enschede.

A total of 16 people were injured, two seriously, by falling steel and rubble when the roof at the southern end of the stadium collapsed around midday yesterday.

Rescue workers freed trapped building workers buried beneath the wreckage which collapsed onto the bank of seats behind the goal and sniffer dogs were brought in to check for any others.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known but Peter den Oudsten, the town’s mayor, told reporters two support beams had buckled.

FC Twente are one of Holland’s top football teams.
