World’s oldest couple ‘over the moon’ at garden party with Queen

A COUPLE from Bradford believed to be the oldest married couple in the world were “over the moon” at meeting the Queen at a Buckingham Palace garden party, their family said yesterday.

Karam Chand, who is 107, and his wife Kartari, 100, travelled to London from West Yorkshire with relatives on Wednesday, and spent 20 minutes chatting with Her Majesty and other senior royals.

Dr Sodhi Rem, one of their three sons, said: “This was a great honour, not only for Mr and Mrs Karam Chand, but also for the entire family.

“After meeting the Queen we also met the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Camilla, and Kate (the Duchess of Cambridge) and other members of the Royal Family.

“My mum and dad were over the moon when they came and met with them face to face; it was a dream come true.”

He added: “They also liked the atmosphere. The food was excellent and the band that played throughout the party was fantastic.”

The Sikh couple were both born in the Punjab region of India and moved to England in 1966. They celebrated their 87th wedding anniversary last December.

Speaking after his wife’s 100th birthday celebrations last November, Mr Chand revealed some tips on the secrets of a long life and long marriage.

“I have always enjoyed life to the fullest and that’s the best way to be,” he said.

“I smoke the odd cigarette here and there along with a brandy but I generally don’t overdo it with my food and drink.”

The couple have 27 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
