Worldwide biddersboost charity sale

An auction of rare books to raise funds for a famous literary haunt in Yorkshire attracted bids from across the world yesterday.

Nearly 100 books and prints donated by booksellers raised 4,600 in the sale at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn.

Bids came from as far afield as Austria, Italy, Canada and America, and the money will help finance repairs to Shandy Hall in the North Yorkshire village of Coxwold, best known as the home of Tristram Shandy author Laurence Sterne.
